'1939'
I was just
A little girl
They left me home
All day...
They said if
I was good
They'd bring a
Present for me.
All day long
I imagined
What it would be
A doll perhaps
or a buggy?
or maybe both?
They finally returned
and I ran to them
Expectant eyes
Shown bright...
Mom reached into
A bag
and handed me a
Ten cent ribbon
on a card...
It was blue
And so was I.
IS THAT ALL?
I said
Ingrate that I am...
My Dad's eyes teared
He turned away
A lesson hard
I learned that day.
